Who this plan suits

A documentary team running concurrent video transcode pipelines for an archival ingest, an investigative consortium scraping public-record databases at a meaningful clip, a working publication whose CMS plus search-index plus full-text indexer plus image processor compete for CPU within the same machine, a regional NGO running an analytics pipeline over its own member data without sending it to a third-party processor. The Ryzen 9 platform's single-thread performance is what makes this tier different from the EPYC-based options: it favours latency-sensitive workloads over throughput-heavy ones.

It is the wrong tier for a workload that needs sustained throughput across many concurrent processes — DS Pro on the 24-core EPYC platform is the better answer there. It is the wrong tier for a workload that fits cleanly in a virtualised environment where co-tenancy is acceptable — VPS-16 at half the price covers that case. DS Lite remains the right tier when the upgrade from VPS is purely about removing the hypervisor from the trust boundary.

Where this plan can be operated

DS Mid is racked in Iceland or Switzerland. Lead time is two to five business days; we order the hardware, rack it, configure the network and the customer's chosen RAID-1 layout, run the install, and confirm by email. The fifty-terabyte monthly transfer allowance is meaningful at this tier — for a workload that ingests or distributes mid-bitrate video, Iceland's transit cost-economics and Switzerland's transit-density both sustain that volume without throttling.

The hundred-gigabit DDoS shield is operationally meaningful: a publication that draws sustained adversarial traffic — a leak archive that gets attention, an investigative site whose recently-published material attracts a hostile audience — needs an upstream filter that survives the kind of campaigns that take smaller shields offline. Both Iceland and Switzerland operate on transit lanes that route around the typical bottleneck points where a single Tier-1 incident would otherwise turn into a deliverability problem.

What the operator sees, and what it does not

The operator's mechanical view on DS Mid is the same as on DS Lite: IPMI/BMC (disabled by default, enabled on customer request only), rack-switch network counters, billing metadata. The Ryzen 9 platform supports AMD's secure-encrypted-virtualization extensions if the customer wants to run an additional hypervisor layer themselves on top of the bare-metal — that is a customer decision, and the operator does not require any such layer.

Full disk encryption with TPM-backed keys is recommended; we do not retain the key. The RAID-1 layout means a single drive failure does not interrupt the workload — we replace the failed drive without taking the machine offline, the rebuild proceeds in the background. Payment in Monero, Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or cash; for production workloads at this price tier, annual prepayment in Monero is the cleanest financial surface and shaves a percentage off the monthly figure.
