Who this plan suits
A newsroom running mail under multiple bylines and section domains, an NGO with country chapters whose mail surfaces need to reflect the chapters' identities ([email protected]) rather than collapse into a single domain, an investigative consortium whose member publications each have their own published mail surface, a press-freedom organisation hosting mail for member outlets under each outlet's own domain. The multi-domain hosting and the catch-all aliases are the structural differentiator: the plan supports the operational shape of a federated organisation.
It is the wrong tier for a single team or individual whose correspondence fits inside one or five mailboxes — Mail Solo and Mail Team are the honest answers there. The unlimited-mailbox cap is fair-use rather than a hard ceiling: an organisation running fifty active mailboxes across three domains is well inside the fair-use envelope; an organisation attempting to run a thousand-mailbox cold-email operation is not, and the AUP at /legal/aup is explicit on that distinction.
Where this plan can be operated
Mail Unlimited can be deployed in Iceland or Switzerland. At organisation scale, the legal-frame question dominates the jurisdiction choice: a federated NGO whose member chapters sit primarily in EU jurisdictions is most conservatively served by Iceland's geographical and treaty distance from EU domestic prosecutors. A consortium whose adversary profile is more diffuse — civil-procedure attacks from various jurisdictions — may find Switzerland's revFADP and the courtroom culture established by ProtonMail v UVEK A-550/2019 a better operational fit. Both jurisdictions sit outside the Five-Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangement.
DKIM, SPF and DMARC are managed by the operator: we publish the DNS records, rotate the keys on a schedule, and respond to deliverability incidents with the upstream mail-receiving operators when they arise. For an organisation whose published work attracts the kind of attention that produces deliverability-attack campaigns (deliberate spam complaints intended to damage sender reputation), the managed-deliverability layer is meaningful. What the operator sees, and what it does not
At organisation scale the operator's mechanical view widens slightly because there is more of it: envelope metadata of in-flight mail across all hosted domains, IMAP login patterns across all mailboxes, the DNS records the operator publishes on the customer's behalf, billing metadata, stored-mail volume per domain. The catch-all aliases produce additional envelope-metadata surface (mail addressed to non-existing mailboxes still produces SMTP envelopes that we see) and that is a structural property of the catch-all primitive, not an operator-side choice.
What we cannot see, and what a sober operator should never claim to be unable to see by gentleman's agreement alone: PGP-encrypted message bodies across all domains, the contents of TLS-protected SMTP flows from cooperating mailhosts, in-memory state on the IMAP/SMTP servers, the organisational relationships between billing identity and mailbox identities. The customer's correspondence-discipline and the customer's choice of which mail to encrypt at the application layer determine how much of the residual envelope-metadata surface matters in practice. Payment in Monero, Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or cash; organisational customers at this tier most often prefer annual prepayment, and the cleanest financial surface for that cadence is Monero.
